Laura Zuniga, a Mexican beauty queen and model from the drug-plagued Mexican state of Sinaloa was arrested with seven suspected gang members in a truck filled with a stash of weapons, including guns, bombs and ammunition, says police. People are being beheaded in an ongoing drug war so why is police parading around Miss Hispanic America in handcuffs? Well, Zuniga was riding in one of two trucks, where soldiers found a large stash of weapons, including two AR-15 assault rifles, several .38 specials, 9mm handguns, nine magazines, 633 cartridges and about $55,000 (we can assume the police took about $50k for themselves) in U.S. currency.

Laura Zuniga stared at the ground in cuffs, with her beautiful flowing dark hair concealing her face, as she stood squeezed between seven alleged gunmen lined up before journalists at a police press-conference. A hottie in handcuffs? Oh my! Soldiers wearing ski masks guarded the 23-year-old model and the suspects. In her defense she had a pretty girly excuse why she was riding a round with a truck filled with gangsters and guns. The Mexican beauty queen, Laura Elena Zuniga Huizar, who was arrested shortly before Christmas on suspected connections to illegal drugs has been sentenced to 40 days into jail.
Jalisco state police director Francisco Alejandro Solorio says Laura Zuniga and seven alleged gunmen were detained at a military checkpoint in Zapopan, just outside the city of Guadalajara.
When the former preschool teacher won Miss Sinaloa in July she gave an impassioned speech about how society should value women more, especially mothers. In October, she won the Hispanoamerican Queen beauty contest in October against competitors from across Latin America.
She placed third in the Nuestra Belleza Mexico pageant in Monterrey in September. That pageant sends its winner to the Miss Universe contest. For placing third, she was expected to represent Mexico in the 2009 Miss International contest.
She was detained on suspicion of drug and weapons violations has been stripped of her crown in the Hispanoamerican Queen pageant.
Zuniga was stripped of first-place honors for “failure to comply with the regulations of the title she represents,” Bolivia-based pageant organizing company Gloria Promociones said in a statement. She beat more than 19 contestants from Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States to win the title in October. Runner-up Vivian Noronha of Brazil will receive the crown.
Zuniga still holds the Miss Sinaloa title from a Mexican state beauty contest in July. And she placed third in the Miss Mexico contest, whose winner competes for the Miss Universe title. As third-runner up, she was expected to represent Mexico in the 2009 Miss International contest. Miss Mexico pageant organizers say they are awaiting the results of the investigation before deciding what to do.
But doubts are already beginning to arise about Zuniga’s string of pageant victories, after a Sinaloa state official told local media that she may not have gone through the proper auditions for the Miss Sinaloa contest.
“Everything indicates she won her crown through the intervention of her boyfriend, a drug lord,” wrote columnist Carlos Puig in the Mexican newspaper Milenio.
Zuniga's boyfriend, Angel Orlando Garcia Urquiza is the top operator for Carrillo Fuentes smuggling organization in Ciudad Juarez, which borders El Paso.
While there is no hard evidence that the slender, striking Zuniga improperly won any of her titles, Mexican drug traffickers are know to take innocuous contests seriously.

On December 23, 2008, Laura Zúñiga was arrested in
Zapopan, Jalisco, along with seven men who allegedly carried illegal guns and US$53,000 in cash. The arrest was made by the state police and army officers.
Zúñiga declared that she was kidnapped by her boyfriend Ángel Orlando García Urquiza, apparently a leader of the Juárez Cartel, and that she was unaware of his illicit activities.
The Nuestra Belleza Mexico organization released a statement saying it had no knowledge of Zúñiga's alleged gangland ties and that it would decide pending an investigation whether to let her keep her crown.
"Nuestra Belleza Mexico has been a serious, honest and transparent organization", said the group's president Lupita Jones, in the statement sent to the media.
On December 25, 2008, a second statement was released announcing that Zúñiga has been stripped of her title as Miss Mexico International 2009. Her successor is yet to be announced.
